Fourth of July

Happy 4th to everyone! It's always such a great holiday. This year it will just be us and Kaslikowski's as Nebekers are going to Meeker, Colorado to watch J.T.'s band perform. I don't know where Meeker is, but I've heard of it. We are having a barbecue and playing games, maybe going to hear a country band at Sandy City Days called "Carolina Rain". I like country music played out of doors.

Here's something that made me chuckle today while looking through old cooking magazines. In a recipe exchange column someone wrote in asking for a recipe. I quote "For years I've been looking for a herring salad recipe my mother made for New Year's Eve. She made it in 1-gallon jars and marinated it in the refrigerator. It included strawberry jam, grape jelly, bologna and potatoes. Please help." I have her name and address if anyone has a copy of that recipe.

Dad and I watched "Defending Your Life" with Albert Brooks last night. What a great show. We also tended Laurel all afternoon. She liked to eat berries from the garden. It was a good day.

Travis paid a visit to the emergency ward two nights ago. He had a terrible migraine and needed help. He and Agata walked to the hospital which is close by. That's got to have been a long walk, though. He was feeling better yesterday and was at the beach.

Danny and Jenni and the boys are at G-ma's with Becca and Mike and family. Becca and Mike are moving to D.C. soon for work.

Alex has been travelling a lot with the interns. He has had great adventures this summer and is very busy. I think he even said they were doing something for the Fourth of July. I need to find out what that was.

Tommy is in Pittsburgh with Rilee. Apparently Pittsburgh has lots of bridges. That's all I know. I will call him soon.

Tyler and Dawn are working until 8:00 tonight then going to Sugarhouse Park for fireworks (or staying home, whichever works.) They have found a house to rent. It's right off of Fourth South and on a little lane called Fletcher Court, and has a community garden for the residents. It's on about 935 East. They are excited. Dad and I drove by and saw two houses, one white and a litte run down without a garage, and one grey-blue and in perfect shape with a garage. Knowing how things go, we figured the white one was the one on the market and the grey one was probably taken. But it's the grey one with the garage.

Happy barbecue wherever you are. I'm looking forward to a hotdog and mustard, and good fun.

Love, Mom

Birthdays

Hi Family,

How did we get so busy? This summer and fall are going to fly by. We have raspberries ripening in the garden, squash growing on the plants, and little green tomatoes. Staying home and just watching things grow would be fun, too, but we have some stuff going on. We are going to G-mas in the middle of July, Seattle for a few days after. Hopefully we will be back in Seattle sometime in September to see our new grandson.

Here's a run-down on summer and fall birthdays, briefly. I might have missed some. Didn't mean to. Let me know.

Laurel - July 7
Alex - July 10
baby Currit- sometime around August 25
G-ma- 3rd? of September
Jenni- Sept. 15
Dawn - Sept. 24 (I think...)
Mama-Sept. 29
Tyler - Oct. 3
Baby Lila - Oct. 23

Tommy and Alex should be here sometime in August. Rilee, too, I think. Keep in touch. We miss you all a lot. But in the meantime we're having a great time here.

Somehow, Agata, we need to make fried green tomatoes for your mom.

Love, Mom

Back from California

I just got back from California late Friday night. Although it was a business trip, we had a great time. I talked Jo into coming with me which is why it was fun. The purpose of the trip was to attend 5 days of training on some software we purchased. The training was held in a place called "Foothill Ranch" in Orange county, not too far from Disneyland. I looked at the map and determined that it was only about 13 miles from Laguna Beach so I booked a hotel right on the beach. Since it was not yet prime season, I was able to book it at the government per diem rate. Anyway, we had a great time. Jo took some pictures which she will, hopefully, post. Jo was able to spend the day relaxing and, at night, we went out to dinner and walked on the beach. I did some body surfing and general playing in the surf and Jo waded. Overall, a great time. I am supposed to go back again in July but am hoping I can postpone it. We were hoping to upgrade the software and that is what the training was about. However, I learned that we would be the first company to actually do the upgrade and that the software to upgrade our database was only starting to be developed. We have too much going on for me to be willing to risk being the guinea pigs on the upgrade process, so I will try to convince my management to postpone the upgrade. Love you all and look forward to seeing you soon.

Graduation

June 12, 2009

Congratulations Travis on graduating from the University of Washington with your Master's Degree (in History). He finished his last paper a few hours before graduation. The degree represents a lot of hard work and dedication. I keep thinking the degree should be in Polish Studies or Post-War Communism. I have enjoyed the thoughts, books (and films) he has shared. I think he might do his doctorate work on Post-war Communist-era housing, but ask him. Travis, we miss being with you this weekend. Thanks for finishing and going to the department ceremonies. It's all cool. There's something to be said for showing up at the end. I recommend it.
